If Not Now, When?
In our new practice brochure, we quote Rabbi Hillel:
If I am not for myself, who will be?
If I am only for myself, what am I?
And if not now, when?
Hillel’s question reflects what we see as a universal search for personal meaning and integrity in relationships. It is so easy to become disconnected, strangers even to ourselves. We may not take care of ourselves personally, physically or spiritually as we run around thinking we should do more.
We may not always know how to best share our time, our money or our selves with others we care about. We may not know how to best share in those activities or causes in which we would like to be more involved. We can lose a sense of what is really important beyond our search for security. We lost heart. Though Hillel wrote in the 1st century A.D., he knew humans have a real struggle with personal balance in their lives.
When Hillel asked, “And if not now, when?” he knew something about what our clients in sales call “closing the deal.” Our personal struggles are struggles because we are called upon to make decisions. To resolve problems within ourselves and between us and others, we must take a stand.
Of course “NOW” can scare us and sometimes depress us. We all tend to put off, avoid doing the harder work when we can. Who needs the problems? But our experience and that of our clients continues to teach us that a decision NOW that is made from within our own integrity, and not with a purpose of hurting others is what creates a future we can grow in and enjoy.
