Who We Are


Raye and Shelly Isenberg are licensed and board certified diplomates in clinical social work with advanced training in individual, couple, family and group dynamics. In practice together since 1974, we have been married for 40 years and have raised a family together. We know something about working out the problems of living. Each of us is capable of listening and sorting out the real issues from the talk. We're known for actively engaging our clients in helpful, respectful ways.

Isenberg and Associates has evolved from the Isenberg practice into a flexible association of counseling practitioners who have chosen to associate their independent practices together for purposes of providing counseling services that benefits their clients, practice development and business pragmatics. We provide a full range of psychotherapy and consultation services at our offices in downtown Naperville. Most of us at Isenberg and Associates also have Allied Health privileges at Linden Oaks at Edward Hospital. For 30 years, Isenberg and Associates has enjoyed a reputation within the community for quality professional services.

Sheldon Isenberg, LCSW, BCD co-founded Isenberg and Associates and has been in private practice since 1969. Licensed and a Board Certified Clinical Social Worker he is also a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Shelly has a full practice involving a range of issues from depression, anxiety and life disruptions, such as divorce, affairs, medical issues to life transitions of a more adult developmental level such as aging, career and commitments. He sees many young couples as well as couples at mid-life with the varying issues they face making a life together. While highly trained to understand internal psychological issues Shelly also has a rich family orientation which leads him to give careful attention to his clients' relational problems and needs. In recent years he has experienced a growing number of people coming to him with business issues that are stressing them personally and who wish to privately consult with an objective professional. Given his interest in the issues of professional practices and his own successful practice development and maintenance over the years he has also enjoyed consulting with other professionals in attaining personal practice satisfaction.

Raye Isenberg, LCSW, BCD co-founded Isenberg and Associates in 1980, has been in private practice since 1974 and is a Licensed and Board Certified Clinical Social Worker. She feels privileged by the hundreds of individuals, couples and families who have opened their minds and souls with her, sharing sorrows, anger, joy and growth. Raye works with people from late adolescence through the full spectrum of life cycle issues, including eldercare. A special area of interest for Raye centers on the developmental issues faced by women and couples as well as working with women facing work related issues. Often there are men who prefer working with a female therapist. Raye has had much success working with male clients. Doing group therapy and leading workshops in personal and professional development has also been a rewarding focus for Raye.

Jane Boumgarden, LCSW has been with Isenberg and Associates since 1997. Jane is a full-time Associate Professor of Social Work at Benedictine University since 1986. Jane has particular capacities for working with college students, the elderly and their families and women's issues. She has done much marriage counseling. As a clergyman's wife deeply involved in church community issues and clergy concerns, she welcomes opportunities to work with clergy spouses, career issues among clergy and their families and with the spiritual issues and specific church conflicts experienced by her clients.

Penny Brucker, Ph.D., a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, has her doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in Medical Family Therapy and has been in clinical practice since 1998. She is a full Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and a Member of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society. Penny specializes in couples therapy, conflict resolution, divorce, remarriage/stepfamilies, parenting issues, life transitions, depression, postpartum depression, and other individual and relationship issues. In addition to these areas of specialization, Penny has experience working with individuals and their significant others experiencing acute and chronic illness, particularly cancer. Whether seeking specific changes or simply exploring a client’s thoughts and feelings, Penny stays attuned to her client’s needs and strengths in a goal-directed manner.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Brucker is a faculty member at Argosy University where she teaches couples and family therapy to graduate psychology students. She volunteers at the Cancer Wellness Center in Northbrook, IL where she is a member of their clinical advisory board and assists in their research efforts. Penny also serves as a faculty member at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine where she conducts health services research and quality of life research with individuals living with cancer and their significant others. In this capacity, Penny has published articles in several professional journals.

Madiha Haroon, LMFT, LCPC, CADC, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor. She has been counseling individuals, couples, families and adolescents since 1998. Her main focus is working together with clients in restoring and enriching their personal private lives and their relationships by helping them to become proactive and empowered. Madiha enjoys helping parents with parenting dilemmas, enriching couple’s relationships, and helping adults through life transitions. She also has experience with alcohol and drug issues. She is very understanding of cross-cultural issues in life transitions and is bilingual in Urdu/Hindi.

Christian Locke, LCSW, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has been counseling clients since 1994. He’s a sensitive clinician who creates an atmosphere of optimism while striving to identify and build upon the strengths of each client, couple or family with which he works. He is skilled at working with a wide range of issues faced by adolescents, adults, and seniors. Chris has a particular talent for assisting family members in navigating the personal, legal and bureaucratic complexities of care giving for a loved one needing specialized care beyond in-office counseling in residential or inpatient settings. In addition to his role as a therapist, Christian is a musician and adept at assisting “creative” people in their personal growth. He enjoys exploring how to unlock barriers to their vision and unlocking their full potential as an artist and /or professional.

Jeff Lucas, LCPC, CADC has been a practicing counseling professional in the chemical dependence and mental health fields since 1986. He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, a Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor, and a Certified Group Psychotherapist. With Isenberg and Associates since 2000 his full-time practice includes working with adults, couples, families and groups. He has specialized training and experience in the areas of the addictions, dual diagnosis issues, and visualization methods for personal/transpersonal development, EMDR for resolution of trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression, and group therapy for chemical dependence/substance abuse. Jeff's view of people is that we have commonly held inherent values, which can be accessed in the here and now and regularly cultivated to facilitate personal and transpersonal development. He strives to facilitate his client's experience of themselves from within whatever perspective is most comfortable to them.

Krista Sherinian, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in practice since 1997. Her practice concentrates on working with children, adolescents and young adults, 6 - 21, and their families. Krista brings a background in Holistic Methods of Treatment, such as Relaxation and Stress Management skills, Emotional Freedom Techniques and Cognitive-Behavioral methods which enable her clients to learn skills in self-management of their behavioral and anger impulses, anxieties, depressive ruminations and syndromes such as ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorders and dual-diagnosis issues. Her extensive background in psychiatric and addiction programs within hospitals and intensive outpatient settings allows her to easily help clients making an aftercare transition. She has an abiding interest in healthy living which leads her to be interested in helping clients manage nutritional influences on behavior and feeling. Krista has bi-lingual training and can offer all her services in Spanish. She is available for Medical and Psychiatric Interpretation.

Gail West-Hooper, LCSW has been a practicing clinical social worker since 1984 and in the private sector for 16 years. Over the years she has focused her practice on women's issues, adolescents and their families and substance abuse problems for individuals and their families. She has had two years of post-graduate specialized education and training in the problems of substance abuse. Gail describes her passion as working with women through their own growth process such as life transitions, working through trauma, and relationship issues, often using creativity and group work in the healing process.
